Gig Economy Regulation and Employment Classification in Europe

This report provides an overview of court cases and legislative initiatives aimed at regulating the employment status of gig worker in Europe.

A trend can be identified throughout the European Union, where increasingly more discussions are centered around gig workers and their place in the labor market.

Similarly, in most European countries court cases debating the employment status of gig workers have emerged. Some of these instances have set a precedent and even more cases have begun to follow. Overall the trend in Europe is for legislators to recategorize platform workers as workers or employees of the platforms. This will have implications for the benefits that platform companies need to provide as well as their responsibilities to platform workers, ultimately shaping and changing the worker-platform relationships.
