Working via a smartphone is a trend rapidly spreading worldwide. You can work full-time, part-time, weekend and extra jobs by joining an online platform (Foodora, Airbnb, Rover, etc.) in your city.  To begin: look for your city on Appjobs, create an account, and browse through the job categories available where you live.

Appjobs is becoming more popular among people looking for flexible work. And as the number of Appjobs members grows, so do the messages and questions we receive. Save yourself some time and stress and find some help below!

1. GENERAL QUESTIONS

1.1. What is Appjobs?

It is a free job search website, connecting job seekers with apps such as Shipt, Postmates, Neighbor, and many more. 1.2. Is Appjobs an app?

Yes and no. Appjobs is a job search website where users can find all the available platforms operating in their city, and it’s free to use. The website is 100% mobile responsive.

1.3. What is an app job?

An app-based job or job offer is a way to make money using apps. You can make money with mobile apps, such as Uber (driving), DoorDash (delivery), Rover (pet sitting), TaskRabbit (handyman), and much more. You can apply for a job, find clients, complete tasks, and get paid safely through your phone. These jobs can be full-time or part-time and you can apply for more than one at the same time. Remember that in most cases you need to have a bank account as payments tend to be made online (via direct deposit, bank transfer, PayPal, etc.). Sometimes a tipping feature is built-in to the app by default, and sometimes they allow cash payment when it comes to tipping. You can access all available job offers in your city here.

1.6. What type of jobs are available on Appjobs?

  1. On Appjobs, you cannot find (many) traditional job offers. Instead, you get informed about job opportunities that allow you to make money through apps and online platforms.

In most cases, this means that:

  • you can apply using your phone or computer.
  • you don’t need a CV/résumé.
  • you don’t need to attend rounds of interviews. (In some cases, a face-to-face or phone interview is conducted by the company.)
  • you can start working with no previous experience. (In some cases, relevant work experience and/or a particular license or certificate is a must.)
  1. On Appjobs, you can choose from several apps and categories: delivery, driving, cleaning, pet sitting, babysitting, scooter charging, freelancing, online teaching, home-cooking, home rental, local guiding, and many more. You will use the apps and websites of the job offers you choose, and will also get paid through them.
  2. Keep in mind that you will likely not be hired as an employee. Instead, you will be considered an independent contractor/gig worker. (Some companies hire people as W-2 employees in the USA.)

2. SEARCHING FOR A JOB USING APPJOBS

2.1. How to apply for a job step by step?

Here is a detailed overview of how you can sign up and access personalized job ads.

2.2. Can I apply for multiple companies?

It depends on the companies you want to work with. There are gig workers who combine delivery driving and driving, for example. They take passengers as Uber or Lyft drivers and deliver packages when the number of rides is low and/or the rides don’t pay so well. Always check whether you’re allowed to work with two companies, especially if their profiles are similar: let’s say you could find cleaning or care jobs with both of them. If this is not mentioned on their main pages (for example Help or Support), look for an answer in their Terms & Conditions. And you can maybe ask them directly by email or phone before hitting the button Sign Up.

2.3. What if my city is not available?

If your city still doesn’t appear in the search bar, it is because we are not there yet. If you live next to the capital city, choose that one instead. And don’t worry, we are growing fast. You can also request your city in the search bar. In case you use Appjobs in a language other than English, we suggest that you change it to English. This way you can also find those cities and job offers that haven’t been translated into other languages yet.
And you can always try another city nearby and/or start working online from your home or anywhere in the world.

2.4. What are the next steps after I have applied for an appjob?

Once you have applied for an app job or job offer, you will have to wait for further instructions from the company. They will contact you when they complete the background check. You will also receive an email about the next steps such as  where to get the equipment or whether or not you will receive any equipment in the mail.

2.5. How long does it take to get a job?

Most companies need up to a week to get in contact with you. In some cases (like with Uber), it can take up to three weeks. Companies have to process and/or review your application, including documents submitted. If you haven’t received a confirmation email for your application within a couple of weeks, that might indicate that something has gone wrong during the application process. In that case, we suggest you try again.

2.6. I submitted my documents but the company didn’t get back to me (yet). What should I do?

For some companies, it can take a while to review your documents and to complete a background check. (Not all companies arrange a background check for you. They may recommend some background check companies to you.) You should typically expect a response from the company within seven business days. Remember that companies inform everyone about the end of the sign-up process. If you don’t receive such an email, that might indicate that something went wrong during the application process. In that case, we suggest you try again.

2.7. Whom I need to contact if the company does not reply?

If you don’t receive a reply from the company within x number of business days (check what the company says on their website), we’re here to help you. Email us at [email protected] and we will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

2.8. Will the companies listed on Appjobs employ me?

Appjobs is a website that connects job seekers with app-based jobs. After you register on Appjobs, you will find opportunities make money in your city. For example, you can deliver food with Deliveroo, teach online with Udemy, clean with Housekeeper.com, or look after pets with PetBacker. It’s quite unlikely that you’ll be hired as an employee. Instead, you will be considered as an independent contractor/gig worker in most cases. Being an independent contractors/gig workers  allows you to manage your workload. Even though you are not employed by the company, you may receive some soft and/or social benefits. It’s important to note that some companies may employ you (for example as a W-2 employee), but the flexibility still stands.

In most cases, all the payments are processed by the company you choose to work with. Each of them has a policy, so we recommend that you check this piece of information during the sign-up process. In case you sign up for a platform that is a self-serve agency (for example CareGuide’s Sitter, PetSitter.com, HouseSitter.com, etc.), you have to discuss the payment method with each of your clients separately.

Here are some commonalities for most of the companies:

  • You have to have a bank account to get paid.
  • Payments are usually processed weekly or bi-weekly.
  • PayPal is a very common tool to get paid.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. What are the requirements to start working?

Different app jobs have different requirements, which can vary depending also on the city where the company’s services are provided. You can check all the information on the job offer page.

In most cases, the basic requirements are:

  • You have a valid ID or passport
  • You must have proof of eligibility to work in the country if you are a foreigner (a working holiday visa is fine)
  • You must have no criminal history
  • You must be 18 or older (or between the age of 13 and 17 if you are a teenager)
  • You must have a bank account
  • You must have a smartphone (with access to the Internet) that is compatible with the app

3.2. How do I know if I meet all the requirements to start an app job?

You have to first complete your profile and add your resources.

Resources are tools that might be required to make money with an appjob. For example:
If you want to be a driver with Lyft → you need to own a car
If you want to be an online teacher with Lingoda → you need a computer
If you want to be a deliverer with Foodora → you need a bike
For any of these, you will need a smartphone with internet connection. All these tools (car, computer, bike, smartphone, internet) are resources.

Remember to pick resources on your profile which will help us to give you better results in job searching!

3.3. Do I need a CV/resumé?

You don’t need a CV/resumé to start working. In most cases, there will be no interview(s) either. This is one of the amazing things about app jobs. All you need is to read the requirements of each job and check if you have the necessary resources to start working. This is why it’s important that you keep your profile up to date. The more information you provide for us, the more we can help you find the job that you want.

Nonetheless, the sign-up process may include several steps. The most common are:

  • You have to verify your identity.
  • You have to go through a background check. (In some cases, you may have to pay for it.)
  • You have to do some assessment tests.
  • You have to do a trial project. Freelance clients can request that you show your portfolio or do a trial project for them. This changes from client to client and might apply to freelance projects with bigger budgets.

3.4. Do I need any previous experience to get started with an app job?

In most cases, you do NOT need relevant work experience to start a job via smartphone. You can choose the job of your liking and sign up. Some jobs require some experience: for example babysitting jobs, some caregiver jobs for the elderly, online teaching or massage therapy jobs. Before applying, always read the requirements and check if you have the necessary resources to start working. This is why it’s important that you keep your profile up to date. The more information you provide for us, the more we can help you find the job that you want. (Remember that Appjobs also matches gig workers with additional services, such as tax help, insurance, etc., they might need while working in the gig economy.)

3.5. I am under 18 years old. Can I work?

Yes! Appjobs has opportunities for those between 13-17. Since you are under 18, there are some limitations regarding which companies you can sign up for. If the company allows you to sign up even if you’re not 18, you will need your legal guardian’s permission. (PetSitter.com, Sitter.com, and Freelancer.com and some other platforms welcome teens under 18.) Always check the requirements before clicking on Quick Apply.

3.6. Do I need to speak the local language to get started with an app job?

When it comes to speaking the local language, it depends on the job. With most jobs, you can get by with English. You can give a guided tour to tourists, find an English-speaking nanny job, or work as a freelance web developer communicating with your clients in English, for example. As for other jobs, like cleaning or delivery, the interaction with clients is minimal, and you could get by with even a little bit of English wherever in the world you might be.

3.7. Do I need a visa to do app-based jobs?

The vast majority of the job offers on Appjobs require you to have a work visa (and a social security number). This is true for jobs such as Uber (driving), TaskRabbit (handyman), Hyer (cleaning, delivery, etc.), and many others. Always check the requirements in the case of each job offer.

If you choose to be a remote worker, you usually don’t need a visa to start working. The only requirement is that you have a reliable Internet connection. This is the case for online freelance jobs, including working for Lingoda (online teaching), Upwork (creative freelancing), and Etsy (online selling). However, we kindly ask you to always check the requirements: you may need to be a citizen of a particular country or have a bank account opened in a certain country to get started with a platform. (It’s usually the Terms and Conditions of the company that contains this important information.)

3.8. Is Appjobs going to provide me with a visa and cover travel costs if I want to move to another country to start a job?

No. Appjobs will not help you with legal documents or travel costs.

3.9. Will I work from a fixed location?

It depends on the nature of the job. If you work remotely as an online freelancer, you can be in China and work for a client somewhere in Europe, for example. All the meetings, communication and details with your clients can be managed via messaging and video calls. If the job requires your physical presence (for example cleaning, pet sitting or delivery driver jobs), then each app will give you instructions on where you should go.

4. JOB SECURITY AND BENEFITS

4.1. What to know about taxes?

Find answers to your most common tax-related questions below.

  1. As a gig worker, do I have to pay taxes?
Short answer: yes.! Anyone with a taxable source of income, including freelancers and the self-employed must pay taxes to the IRS, although this is not done in the same way as full-time workers. You still have to report all earnings to the IRS.
  2. What form do I fill out when paying taxes?
  • All American citizens and foreigners residing and working in the US must fill out a 1040 form.
  • In addition, all gig workers and freelancers who receive a yearly income through a third party and have accumulated 200 transactions (ie. 200 rides on Lyft) and over $20,000 must fill out an additional 1099-K form.
  • If these earnings are less than $20,000 and more than $600, you must fill out a 1099-MISC form.

Some companies might provide these forms for you and even fill them out, however, it is your responsibility to make sure your tax forms are correctly filled out and submitted to the IRS before April 15th of every fiscal year. Keep in mind that you might also be eligible to pay your taxes in installments.

  1. Can I write off any expenses?
Yes, you can deduct expenses like the standard mileage rate, data costs for your phone, transaction fees, insurance, and car maintenance costs. Additionally, you can also deduct interest on car loans and even parking and toll expenses.

To track your finances (taxes included) on Appjobs, visit the page My Desk. This feature is not mandatory, so you are free to track your finances on other applications.

4.2. Is all my personal data safe? Even if I provide my credit card number to track my finances?

Yes, all your data is safe and compliant with GDPR. For more information, read our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.
You can also delete your account and information from our database by selecting the “delete account” option on your profile page.

4.3. Will I be provided with insurance?

Some companies may provide you with insurance, some may charge a fee for that, for example for health insurance. Remember that finding a job with Appjobs is 100% free. You don’t need to pay for using our services. However, we highly recommend getting insurance as a gig worker before you start a new job. For insurance, you either need to pay a fee or the company subtracts that from your earnings. You can have tailored insurance with Appjobs for a reasonable price. Having insurance helps you focus on the job instead of worrying about your safety while working.
