How Much does a DoorDash Driver Make?

Dashers make a vary amount of money depending on the hours worked, city, as well as promotions. While DoorDash states that a Dasher typically makes around $15-25 per hour some other websites such as the Ridesharing Driver  suggest that $8-15 per hour is more standard. The Ridesharing Driver also says to calculate your earnings after DoorDash takes their share, use the equation: Base pay + Promotions + Tips = Total Earnings. Base pay is how much of the delivery fee you will receive which is typically a minimum of at least $2, while promotions are city and time dependent such as during rush hours, and lastly tips are fully given to Dashers.

Tips to maximize your earnings as a DoorDash driver

There are a lot of different ways to try and maximize earnings with DoorDash but some of the best tips per categories are:

  1. Shifts are posted at midnight and staying up to be able to choose shifts that are during peak hours is a tactic often used by Dashers.
    • Peak shifts are typically Fridays-Mondays, during inclement weather, or sporting events
  2. Dash Now allows drivers to sign in for deliveries in specific areas without having scheduled a block of time due to high demand. As Dash Now can be dynamic, it is important to access the benefits of driving to the specific location in order to work in case Dash Now is no longer available when you arrive.
  3. Early Access Scheduling gives highly-rated and experienced drivers priority scheduling at 3pm rather than midnight. Every week Dashers must requalify for Early Access so getting high ratings is important which is discussed in the next category of tips.

  1. Communication is key when working as a DoorDash driver and deliverying food to people. Making sure to let them know when you’ve arrived at the restaurant to pick up food as well as keeping them informed during the process often leads to higher ratings as well as types.
  2. Being professional is another great way to impress your customers by both dressing the part as well as when interacting with them.

Dashers are classified as self-employed or 1099 independent contractors. Thus the best way to maximize earnings is to keep track of write-offs such as money spent on gas or mileage spent driving for DoorDash.

Common write-offs include: gas, insurance, car maintenance

Declining orders

DoorDash gives you the opportunity to see how much an order is worth before accepting it which can be both beneficial and detrimental. Declining orders is harmful for your acceptance rate which can be useful for early access scheduling. However, declining orders strategically can be beneficial for earnings.

DoorDash Driver Support

The best way to receive help from DoorDash as a DoorDash driver is through their support center.

Doordash Alternatives

Doordash is not the only food delivery service that is available worldwide. Other alternatives include companies such as Postmates, Grubhub, UberEats or Shipt. These companies are well known worldwide, however, many countries have specific food delivery services such as Foodora which is a Germany based company or Glovo which was established in Spain. There are many other delivery service companies that deliver other goods not only food as well such Amazon Flex.
